Public Education InstituteThe Public Education Institute was established in 1985 as an independent organization located on the campus of Rutgers University. PEI creates a neutral forum where citizens, community leaders, scholars, and policymakers can debate local and state educational issues and recommend policies on the basis of information that is unbiased, timely, and grounded in sound theory and research. PEI is aligned with no interest group, political sector, or educational philosophy. Its belief is, very simply, that informed public opinion and scholarly argument can convince educational policymakers to respond vigorously and creatively to the challenges of building a healthy, equitable, and effective public school system. Topics examined by PEI have direct and immediate bearing on major educational issues being considered by New Jersey’s state and local policymakers. Topics may include, for example, indicators of school quality, the preparation and certification of administrators, citizen involvement in education, the reform of special education, youth unemployment, teachers’ working conditions, and the deterioration of school facilities. These topics are discussed and analyzed by policy analysis, seminars, roundtables, and local forums. PEI seeks to include in its activities leaders of state agencies concerned with youth; members of state legislature, education associations, and civic associations; faculty at Rutgers University and other institutions of higher education; staff from the New Jersey Department of Education; representatives of business and labor; and other individuals and groups interested in improving public schools.
