Special education data doesn’t have to feel intimidating. This hands-on BRIDGE webinar introduces SEPAG parent leaders to the NJDOE Special Education Placement Dashboard, and no prior data experience is needed. You’ll practice looking up your own district in small groups and see how it compares with state and national figures.
Presenters: Katy McDermott (Roselle Park SEPAG Co-Leader and parent, BRIDGE Working Group Member) and Iman Basit (Research Analyst, Rutgers CESP)
The First in the Rutgers BRIDGE Data Essentials Series.

Did you know New Jersey publishes data that can help you learn more about special education in your school district? Through the NJDOE Special Education Placement Dashboard, families can explore the educational environments in which students with disabilities are served, from general education classrooms to more specialized settings.
Why it matters for SEPAGs. This information can complement the experiences families share by giving a broader view of educational placement patterns across their district. But where can you find this data, what can you learn from it, and how might it be useful for your SEPAG?
What you’ll do. Join the BRIDGE Initiative for a hands-on introduction to this public resource, which covers students with disabilities ages 3 to 21.
– Explore placement data for students with disabilities ages 3 to 21
– Compare your district with state and national figures and look at trends over time
– Hear how a SEPAG parent leader uses this data to plan her SEPAG’s meetings
– Look up your own district in small groups and share observations with other parent leaders
No prior experience with data is needed. We encourage you to join from a laptop or desktop computer for the hands-on activities.
This webinar is the first in a BRIDGE series on publicly available special education data from the NJDOE Office of Special Education, with future sessions for families and educators.
